Kael Vitorelo is a multidisciplinary artist with experience in different visual languages and their intersections - illustration, design, video, animation.
They completed their master's degree in Communication and Semiotics at PUC-SP with a CAPES-CNPQ scholarship, on experimental comics and political resistance, presented at the International Comic Book Conferences of ECA-USP. They wrote a column for Mina de HQ about comics and feminism. They write about and research gender, feminism, transgenderism and non-binarity, having participated in the book “Contranormativo – Muldões em Aliança: subjetividades divergentes” by FFLCH-USP, and in the GMMP monitoring in Brazil.
They are lato-sensu specialist in Animation from Senac São Paulo, having taught in the area. They worked for the art team in the animated series “Vivi Viravento”, and is now part of the art team for the animated feature film “Ana, en passant”, by Fernanda Salgado.
In their experience with cinematheir short film “Painted Women” was exhibited in several festivals throughout the country, including the São Paulo International Short Film Festival – Kinofórum, Mostra Curta o Gênero, Campinas Short Film Festival. Among their clients for video editing, they had Buzzfeed and Sabesp.
They are a versatile designer with experience ranging from print to digital pieces, including motion. They worked for two years in the Design department at FSB Comunicação, the largest corporate communications agency in Latin America. As a freelancer, they have also worked for international clients, combining illustration and design in their projects. They're the responsible designer for all their published books in Brazil.
In recent years, they also managed small teams and project resources .
Their published graphic novels have been awarded and praised by critics: “Kit Gay” (Editora Veneta, 2021), their debut graphic novel, received an honorable mention from the Mix Literário of the Mix Brasil Festival, and was nominated for the HQ Mix and CCXP Awards. “Tomboy” (independent, 2017) is part of the Museum of Sexual Diversity collection, and is currently on display. Vitorelo has been a guest artist at events such as FIQ – Belo Horizonte International Comics Festival, Curitiba Comics Biennial, and CCXP – ComicCon Experience.
Their most recent book, “Filosofia do Mamilo” ("Philosophy of Nipple", Editora Veneta, 2024), was selected by the ProAC 2023 prize.
